2021 Hokkaido Training Sale Preview

The 2021 Hokkaido Training Sale will move forward this year but with strict COVID-19 health and safety protocols in place to protect all participants in the sale.

This year's sale will be held at Sapporo Racecourse in Sapporo, Hokkaido, on May 11th. Inspections start on May 9th from 10:00 am till 3:00 pm in the stable area, and the undertack show starts at 10:00 am on May 10th.

148 two-year-olds have been cataloged in the sale this year, 64 fillies and 84 colts. Rulership(JPN) leads the way with six entries in the sale. Rulership(JPN) has been a highly consistent sire in Japan, hitting the top ten every year with well over a hundred winners each year and stakes winners. Recent import, Discreet Cat(USA), had a solid start last year with his first crop of Japanese bred offspring, securing seventeen winners overall. He will have even more offspring in his second crop hitting the track later this year, and they have pretty popular in the sales over the past two years, so his five lots in the sale should be popular in the ring. Duramente(JPN) led the way last year as the leading freshman sire. While he is sitting relatively low on the general sire's ranking thus far this year but he already has a classic contender with G2 winner Titleholder(JPN). He has been a hot ticket item at the sales since his first crop were foals, so that trend is likely to continue this year as well. Popular sires Maurice(JPN) and Kizuna(JPN) are both in the sale with two and one lots.

There are many interesting stallions with their first crop debuting this year, and many of them have lots in this year's Hokkaido Training Sale. Copano Rickey(JPN) was a wildly talented dirt runner in his racing days and has been popular with breeders since his retirement. He has two lots in the sale. G1 winner Satono Aladdin(JPN) and the sales darling Silver State(JPN) are both by the late great Deep Impact(JPN) and have two and three lots in the sale, respectively. Big Arthur(JPN) looks to build upon the legacy of talented sire Sakura Bakushin O(JPN) as his first crop prepares to hit the track later this year. He has three lots going through the ring. Classic winner Isla Bonita(JPN) is the sole representative of the late Fuji Kiseki(JPN) in the breeding shed, who was Sunday Silence's first great success story. He has one lot in the sale. Lani(USA) was a fan favorite worldwide after his 2016 United States Triple Crown. He has three lots in the sale. Three imported stallions are debuting this year as well. G1 winning sprinter Drefong(USA) has been a big hit with buyers at the foal and yearling sales the past two years and has two lots in the sale. The War Front(USA) line gets a big boost in Japan with both G1 winner producing sire The Factor(USA) and G1 winner American Patriot(USA) who also debuts this year and has one and four lots in the sale respectively.

Rehearsal breezes were held on April 5th and 9th, and there were two standouts in particular. Hip 56, a Rulership(JPN) filly out of the Jungle Pocket(JPN) mare Solid Reason(JPN). She breezed one furlong in 10.37 at the BTC Hidaka Training Facility in Urakawa, Hokkaido. Hip 138, a Curren Black Hill(JPN) colt out of the White Muzzle(GB) mare More Smile(JPN). He breezed a furlong 11.00 flat at the Hidaka Race Horse Cooperative Upbringing Center in Nikkappu, Hokkaido.
